The Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel

It is the most visited attraction in Italy and it was built by XV century Pope Sixtus IV, hence the name.

The paintings in the chapel were done by the best artists of Italian Renaissance including Botticelli, Perugino and Michelangelo. Its "Creation" is the most famous painting in Italy.

The Rooms of Raphael

The Rooms of Raphael

These are the Rooms of the Apartment of Pope Julius II painted by Raphael.

They are considered the best work of Raphael in the whole world. The most notorious fresco is the School of Athens that depicts Leornardo and Michelangelo as the philosophers Plato and Heraclitus.

The Gallery of Geographic Maps

The Gallery of Geographic Maps

The longest gallery in the Vatican features very precise maps of Italy and the stories of important people that lived in each region.

The most important XVI century geographic maps in the world were designed by the same astronomer who created the new calendar for Pope Gregory XIII, hence the name Gregorian.

The Basilica of St. Peter

The Basilica of St. Peter

The Basilica is the grandest church on earth. It took 120 years to complete and it is the center of the Catholic world.

The best architects of Italian Renaissance worked on it: Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and more. Most popes are buried inside this church and in its square the Pope gives his weekly speeches.

Michelangelo's Pietà

The Pietà

The Pietà is Michelangelo's most famous sculpture and is located in a chapel of the Basilica of St. Peter.

It was done by Michelangelo when he was only 24 years old and it is the only statue signed by him. It took one year of work and was carved from only one piece of marble.

We used Francesca with Tours of Pompeii for our Vatican Tour. She was truly amazing. Being an Art History major she shared a wealth of detail we would have never known otherwise. Love, love, loved her! She was also great with our 4 children and kept them engaged and informed. Thanks for a wonderful tour!

We had a really fun time with Claudia at the Vatican, she was full of knowledge and answered all of our random questions. She was a complete expert. It was a nice surprise when we realized this was a private tour. We paid almost the same rate for a 12 person group tour with another company that wasn't nearly as good. Highly recommend Tours of Pompeii.

My wife and I did an afternoon tour of the Vatican Museum and the Basilica of St. Peter with Francesca from Tours of Pompeii. As recommended we purchased our tickets on line ahead of time. We also went in mid-afternoon, entering just before 2:30 PM. Even though we were there at the height of tourist season the crowds, while plentiful, were not overwhelming at that time. Having a knowledgeable tour guide was invaluable. Francesca was able to point out the most important pieces and tell us their history. She moved at our pace and spent almost four hours with us. Even in the Basilica, Francesca knew the architectural and artistic details of this incredible structure. We had a wonderful afternoon.

My friend and I rocked up to the Vatican last Wednesday having decided we must visit the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's, Not only did we get to see the main man (the Pope) by pure chance we happen to get a tour with Nicolo. It was amazing, fantastic and a few other fancy words! Nicolo speaks perfect English and is wildly passionate about the history and the artwork of his country, to boot he's cute, adorable and really very funny!! Having never been to Rome before I wished we could of had him as a tour guide for all the other amazing sites we visited. So if I may be so bold, if there's one tour you take while in Rome make sure it;s with Nicolo and Tours of Pompeii. Utterly brilliant.

Although it's possible to visit the Vatican on your own, most people choose to go with a tour group if only to skip the lines. We chose Tours of Pompeii''s three-hour tour in English and it surpassed all expectations. Our guide, Nicolo, was so knowledgeable, and his delivery so expressive, that it made everything come to life. The tour took us through the Vatican museum, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basillica. AWESOME!!!

One hour extra to visit the Vatican Pinacoteca

Raphael's Transfiguration

The Pinacoteca is a separate painting galley in the Vatican. It is often not included in 3 hours standard tour of the Vatican.

The painting gallery features great Italian artworks from the XIII to the XVIII century including masterpieces by Giotto, Caravaggio, Raphael, Leonardo, Titian, Veronese and much more!
